Built solid - but the pipes are getting on

Much of Pascoe Vale went up in the interwar and postwar years, and those solid brick homes were often plumbed in galvanised steel. Seventy years on, galv pipe rusts from the inside - the telltale signs are dropping water pressure, rusty-tinged water first thing in the morning, and pinhole leaks that stain walls before anyone spots them.

The suburb's mature gardens are part of its charm, and the tree roots underneath them are part of ours - older sewer lines here get the same root intrusion story as the rest of the inner north. Clearing is quick; a camera inspection tells you whether it'll be back.
